Chapters in Utah have now sent a statewide total of 23 volunteers out of state for disaster relief efforts.

But the Red Cross has other volunteers who help the Chapter in many ways, including serving as a distinguished member of the Board of Directors.

MY EXPERIENCE WITH RED CROSS

At midnight on July 1, 2007, my house in the Rose Park subdivision of Salt Lake City caught fire. I was asleep in bed when I heard my son-in-law, Josh, yelling: “Dad get out of the house!” In my semi-conscience state I smelled smoke and went to investigate the source. I found our utility room engulfed in flames. I looked around the door jam, into the laundry area, and saw flames from the back of the dryer. Just then, I saw the natural gas flex hose turn into a fire-breathing snake and the room explode into flames. To this day I have a vision of a doorway full of flames in my mind.

In September 2004, a Category 5 Hurricane named Ivan swept across the Caribbean and made landfall in Alabama. It soon reentered the Atlantic, grew in strength and then swept across Florida, causing extensive damage. One the hardest hit areas was Pensacola, where GSLAC volunteer Keith Keyser was helping to operate a shelter. This was Keith’s first experience with Red Cross.

Five Red Cross volunteers from Utah ped everything in their lives to answer the call for help coming from families in the Midwest. Three from the Greater Salt Lake Area Chapter and two from Ogden, Northern Utah’s Chapter. One of the volunteers is outgoing,, 55 – year old Jo-Lynn Hatch of Taylorsville. She took on the responsibility of arming the army of volunteers coming from across the USA to help with the flood and tornado relief efforts.
